Asscher Diamond Ring with Hidden Halo
About This Design
The Asscher cut is one of fine jewelry’s most distinctive diamond shapes. Created in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers in Amsterdam, it’s a square step-cut diamond with deeply cropped corners, giving it an almost octagonal silhouette and a “hall of mirrors” optical effect, long, layered facets that step inward toward the center and create dramatic flashes of light rather than the rapid sparkle of a brilliant cut. The cut had its first golden age during the Art Deco era and has remained a hallmark of vintage-inspired engagement ring design ever since.
Solitaire Asscher places this cut in a setting that respects its geometry. Four prongs hold the diamond at its cropped corners, the most vulnerable points of the stone, while the rest of the design stays clean and architectural. A hidden halo of pavé diamonds wraps around the base of the center stone, following its square silhouette and visible only from the profile view. From the top, the Asscher’s distinctive geometry is uninterrupted. From the side, the halo adds a quiet flash of additional brilliance.
The shank stays smooth and polished, tapering slightly toward the back of the finger to keep visual weight at the center stone. There’s no surface ornamentation, no pavé on the band, no decorative detail competing with the diamond.
It’s an engagement ring for someone drawn to the geometric elegance of step-cut diamonds and the timelessness of Art Deco design, with just enough modern detail to feel current rather than purely historical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between an Asscher cut and an emerald cut? Both are step-cut diamonds, meaning their facets are arranged in long, parallel lines rather than the small triangular facets of a brilliant cut. The key difference is shape: Asschers are square with deeply cropped corners, giving them an almost octagonal outline, while emerald cuts are rectangular. Asschers also have a distinctive “windmill” facet pattern visible when looking straight down through the top, where light bounces in concentric squares toward the center.
Do Asscher cuts sparkle less than round brilliants? Asschers don’t have the rapid, scattered sparkle of a round brilliant. Instead, they produce long, dramatic flashes of light, sometimes called the “hall of mirrors” effect, where light steps inward through the layered facets. It’s a different kind of beauty, more architectural and slower, less twinkly. The hidden halo of pavé diamonds in this design adds brilliant-cut sparkle around the base, which complements the Asscher’s step-cut light play.
Are Asscher diamonds harder to find than other shapes? Asschers are less common than rounds, ovals, or cushions, but they’re widely available in both natural and lab-grown options. Quality matters significantly with Asschers, the cropped corners and step facets need to be perfectly symmetrical for the cut to read clearly, and color and clarity are more visible in step-cut stones than in brilliant cuts.
Do you offer lab-grown diamonds? Yes, we work with both lab-grown and natural diamonds. Your designer can walk you through the differences in price, sourcing, and certification to help you choose what fits your priorities.
How long does it take to make Solitaire Asscher? Typically 4 to 6 weeks from final design approval to delivery.
